Hypertension

Salt is hiding in food you would never suspect

Most of your daily salt comes from processed food, not the shaker. Bite Insight shows you exactly how much sodium is in everything you eat.

Cutting salt is simple in theory
and hard in practice

Most people assume they can just stop adding salt. The reality is that the vast majority of our daily sodium intake comes from products we do not even think of as salty.

UK adults have high blood pressure

Hypertension is one of the most common conditions in the UK and a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. Many people do not know they have it until it is picked up at a routine check.

Of daily salt intake comes from processed food

Three quarters of the salt we eat comes from processed and prepared foods, not from cooking or the table. Bread alone is one of the biggest contributors, alongside ready meals, cereals, and condiments.

Maximum recommended daily salt intake

The NHS recommends no more than 6g of salt per day for adults with hypertension. Most UK adults consume significantly more than this, often without realising it because so much salt is hidden in everyday foods.

Common questions

About using Bite Insight with hypertension.

Yes. Set hypertension or high blood pressure in your health profile and every scan then checks the product's salt and sodium content and flags it clearly. This makes it much easier to stay within your daily sodium limit without having to manually check and convert figures on every product you pick up.

The sodium indicator rates each product as Low Sodium, Moderate Sodium, High Sodium, or Very High Sodium based on its salt content per 100g and per serving. It also handles the conversion between sodium and salt automatically so you always see both figures clearly, whichever way the product label presents them.

Yes. UK food labels sometimes list only one or the other, and the conversion between them (sodium x 2.5 to get salt) is not always obvious. Bite Insight handles that automatically so you always have a clear picture of how much sodium is in each product regardless of how the label presents the information.

With Bite Insight+, you can add specific sodium-containing additives to your personal avoid list. Monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrite, sodium bicarbonate, and other sodium-containing additives can all be flagged so they are highlighted automatically every time they appear in a product you scan.

No. Bite Insight provides educational food insights to help you make more informed choices. It is not a substitute for advice from your GP or specialist. Always follow the dietary guidance of your healthcare team and use Bite Insight as a practical tool to support that at the point of purchase.
